I am Chris Hale, but here I go by “The Sober Dad”.
I am 47 years old, a single full time father of three amazing kids, a Middle School Sunday School teacher, actor and theater lover, and a recovering drug addict with ADHD. My children all have ADHD too, so as you can imagine it is sometimes like the distracted leading the distracted. Most importantly though, I am an unapologetic follower of Jesus Christ. Yes, I am a Christian.
My children, referred to here as Kid A (age 16), Kid B (age 14) and Kid C (age 12), are amazing and unique, and may I add hilarious. In addition to all three kids having ADHD, My Son, Kid C, is on the Autism Spectrum, so that certainly delivers it’s own set of parenting challenges. My youngest daughter (Kid B) was born with Pierre Robin Sequence (pronounced Pee-air Row-ban) which included a cleft palate and has required her to have more surgeries in her first few years than I have had in 47 years alive, with the possibility of more in the future. But one thing I can say for sure is that through the challenges, God has blessed me beyond measure with some of the most loving, caring and wonderful children that any man could ever hope to have the honor of parenting.
Then there are my addiction issues. While I have been sober now for twelve years, I still have to take life one day at a time. God has lead me to take my struggles, pain and grief and use it to become a substance abuse and family counselor. I am currently working on becoming a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-I) . Isn’t it amazing how something so horrible can be used to the glory of God?
I started this blog as a way to share my life, thoughts and ideas about not only parenting, but also addiction and how the two topics intertwine. However, it is not a blog for just addicts or parents, but for anyone who wants to be encouraged, entertained, wants to take a look into the life of a guy who has been through some stuff and has come out the other side stronger and more faithful to God and his children.
I hope that as I share my joy, pain, struggle and victory with you here that you will get a little glimpse into what The Sober Dad is all about. After all, sobriety is not just about staying free from drugs, alcohol or whatever it is that enslaves you. Sobriety is about breaking free from bondage and living a life of freedom in Christ. That freedom spills over into everything I do… even parenting.
